Little pieces of bad news can have huge consequences

When I first figured out what it was that I wanted to do with my life, I knew that there was a chance that someday I would be putting all of my effort into a project only to discover that someone managed to get the same idea out into the world before I could. But nothing can prepare a writer for such a disappointment, especially when they thought that their idea was one hundred percent original.

I found that out the hard way today when a friend of mine asked about my musical and revealed to me that what I thought to be a unique idea was actually the opposite.

I guess that I am going to have to look at the hours that I put into the musical as a method of warming up for a bigger project in the future, something even greater than this first attempt. But I can't help but feel an ache in my chest whenever I think about how anxious I was to get the musical finished. All of the deadlines in my schedule book are useless now I guess. No use continuing with something that will get me nowhere.

Once I finish the short story due in my creative writing class this Wednesday and midterms have passed, I'll focus on one of my other projects during Spring Break. Or I'll just read a good book. I haven't done that in a while.

This really sucks. But hey, life goes on.

  1. Just because someone else does something that appears to be just like yours doesn't mean they are synonymous.

You put your own passion and insight into whatever you're working on, just like anyone else. But no one can do what you're doing or put in the feelings you're putting into it.

If you keep at it, you will get the real feel for it. REAL writing projects take lots of time, pain, sweat, tears, heartache and blah blah blah. YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT IS TO WRITE SOMETHING AWESOME.

That means you can't give up. Don't give up.

    please.

But! I totally recommend the reading a good book part of spring break. That makes a world of difference. Maybe you just need some time to focus on YOU and a good book can help you do that.

Also, remember that we're always here for you. No matter what king of things you write.

  2. Chances are that if you've thought of something, someone else has already thought of it before. There are very few truly "original" ideas. Originality comes in the details, I think.

There's nothing quite like a good book, though, for curing what ails you. I prefer mine on a sandy beach with a fruity drink. :)

i know how u feel! i've been writing this badass novel since last year, hoping to publish it sometime this year.
I just found out last week that the story line is very similar to "my sister's keeper" by jodi picoult :(
i've not typed a single word since then :,(
but heyy... keep doing ur thing!!..it may be similar to someone else's idea but u can still give it a unique twist :p

  5. Ouch! That really sucks nuts! I think you should continue on with it because who knows, it might actually might be ten times better than this so called "original"! I Don't think you should give up on it so quickly mama :(

  6. jess, don't let this get you down! i'm sure they aren't exactly alike.. i was just trying to help ya out by telling you about the queen thing.. i feel horrible. it doesn't mean you should give up the musical completely though.. lots and lots of musical have similar story lines. if you just make a few tweaks everything will work out. its a great idea. love youuu! xx.
